Cultural Notes In the Da¶ota family, the first five children born are named according to birth order and gender. The first born, if a boy, would be Çaske, but if a girl, would be Winuna. A family can have a Çaske or a Winuna, but not both. (N. McKay) Parent name children however they wish after the fifth child is born. They can be named for the time of day or the season in which they are born, or they can be given the name of a deceased or elderly relative. (Flute and Schommer 14)
